District 46 recently hosted an engaging and highly interactive educational workshop titled “ACCENTS vs. CLARITY: How to Sound Clear AND Stay Authentic” featuring Melanie Fox.
The virtual session brought together Toastmasters members, guests, multilingual professionals, and public speaking enthusiasts for an evening focused on communication, confidence, and authenticity.
Melanie Fox shared practical strategies for improving clarity in English communication while encouraging participants to embrace their unique cultural identity and personal speaking style. Through a combination of live demonstrations, audience participation, humor, and real-world examples, attendees explored how effective communication is not about eliminating an accent, but about ensuring clarity while remaining authentic.
One of the most memorable quotes from the evening was:
“Clarity and authenticity can happen at the same time.”
Melanie reminded attendees that communication is not about sounding identical to everyone else, but about making sure their message is understood while allowing their personality and culture to shine through.
Another powerful takeaway that resonated deeply with participants was:
“Nobody can be you as well as you do.”
Throughout the workshop, Melanie emphasized that confidence grows when speakers stop focusing on perfection and instead focus on connection, storytelling, and authenticity.
Participants learned:
- Techniques for improving pronunciation and articulation
- The importance of pacing, pauses, and vocal variety
- Common speech patterns and linguistic challenges faced by multilingual speakers
- How to use storytelling and authenticity to connect with audiences
- Practical exercises for sounds such as TH, R, V/W, and vowel distinctions
- Mindset strategies for overcoming fear, perfectionism, and self-doubt in public speaking
The workshop was highly interactive, with attendees volunteering for pronunciation exercises, sharing personal experiences, and participating in discussions about language, culture, and communication.
One particularly impactful moment came when Melanie encouraged participants to let go of the fear of making mistakes:
“Perfection doesn’t make presentations — passion makes presentations.”
She also encouraged attendees to embrace confidence and authenticity by sharing stories, perspectives, and even words from their native languages to build stronger audience connections.
Another standout quote from the evening was:
“Don’t be perfect. Be authentic.”
Melanie shared inspiring examples from her coaching experience, including stories of multilingual speakers who transformed from timid communicators into confident public speakers and award-winning Toastmasters contestants.
District 46 Program Quality Director Stella Umunna, DTM, opened the session by emphasizing the District’s commitment to creating educational experiences that empower members to grow as communicators and leaders in an increasingly diverse and connected world.
The workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, many of whom appreciated the practical communication tips, supportive environment, and encouraging message that every speaker’s voice matters.
For those who were unable to attend live, the session was recorded and will be posted on the District 46 YouTube page for future viewing.
District 46 looks forward to continuing to provide impactful educational workshops that help members build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and communicate more effectively with diverse audiences around the world.
