On May 27, 2026, District 46 members gathered virtually for an engaging and thought-provoking educational session, “Feedback That Fuels Growth: Giving and Receiving Feedback That Matters,” presented by Region Advisor Cindy Laatsch.

A former district evaluation champion and passionate advocate for leadership development, Cindy delivered an interactive workshop that challenged members to rethink the way they give and receive feedback. Through personal stories, practical examples, and audience participation, she demonstrated how feedback can be one of the most powerful tools for helping others grow, build confidence, and achieve their goals.

More Than an Evaluation

Many Toastmasters join to become better speakers, but Cindy reminded attendees that one of the most valuable skills developed through Toastmasters is the ability to provide meaningful feedback.

Rather than viewing evaluations as critiques, Cindy encouraged members to see them as opportunities to inspire growth.

One of the most memorable quotes of the evening was:

“An evaluator is there to be a mirror. They’re there to reflect that person back to themselves.”

Cindy shared a humorous story about an evaluator who was so focused on taking notes that he missed an important section of her speech entirely.

The lesson:

“If I’m writing things down, I can’t really be listening at the same time.”

Seek the Positive

Members were encouraged to intentionally identify and recognize what speakers do well.

“Seek the positive performance, observe it, and then speak it.”

Recognition reinforces effective behaviors and helps speakers build upon their strengths.

Outside formal evaluations, Cindy shared a simple phrase that can transform difficult conversations:

“May I offer you feedback?”

This approach creates respect, trust, and openness before feedback is delivered.
